Forest Park Location:
September 27-28 – Taught by Dr. Emily Spaeth, DPT, IBCLC, TIP
Class Description:
Most people aren’t quite sure how to engage with a baby in a way that supports their little brains. This course is designed for healthcare professionals and caregivers who want a deeper understanding of infant development. We will explore the intricate world of newborn reflexes, emerging motor and sensory skills, and how early temperament shapes interactions and caregiving approaches.
Through a blend of neuroscience, developmental theory, and practical application, participants will gain insight into how infants process their environment and how we can support their optimal growth and nervous system regulation from birth.
Prerequisites:
None.
Healthcare professionals and parents (or parents to be) who want to learn from a clinical perspective are welcome. I will be using medical language, but you are always encouraged to ask questions!
Overview:
This two-day course combines didactic learning, hands-on activities, and case scenarios to deepen understanding of newborn to six-month-old development. Participants will leave with a solid foundation in infant development and be equipped to support the well-being of infants in their care.
By the end of this class you will be able to:
-
Identify key developmental reflexes and their role in early movement.
-
Explain how early motor and sensory skills emerge and integrate over time.
-
Adapt caregiving strategies to align with an infant’s temperament and regulatory needs.
-
Discuss the importance of responsive caregiving in promoting healthy development.
-
Apply strategies to support an infant’s nervous system regulation.
-
Interpret an infant’s motor, attention, autonomic, and behavioral cues to provide appropriate support.
-
Recognize early challenges in reflex integration and sensory processing.
-
Differentiate between developmentally appropriate support and atypical patterns that require referral.
